The brief
Demachy described the inspiration as a wide-open landscape under blue skies at dusk, with Calabrian bergamot and synthetic Ambroxan as the spine.
NameNamed 'Sauvage' (French for 'wild') as a reboot of Dior's 1966 Eau Sauvage, repositioning the line around a raw, untamed character.
Why it mattered
- The Eau de Parfum (2018) reformulates the original EDT around heavier vanilla and tonka, making it a sweeter, denser amber drydown while keeping ambroxan as the signature.
The flacon
Thick-walled rectangular blue-tinted glass flacon with a polished metal collar, designed in-house at Dior; the EDP version has a matte black ridged cap that distinguishes it from the silver-capped EDT.
Worn by
Johnny Depp2015
Signed by Dior in 2015 as the face of Sauvage and remained the campaign's ambassador for years.
Footnotes
- The original Sauvage EDT (2015) was the world's best-selling men's fragrance for multiple years running in the late 2010s.
- Demachy was appointed Dior's in-house perfumer and LVMH perfumes/cosmetics development director in 2006.
- The 2019 'We Are The Land' campaign film was pulled within 24 hours after backlash over Native American imagery.
The Curator's Note
The bestselling masculine of the late 2010s, marketed by Johnny Depp from inside a courtroom.
