The brief
Bourdon aimed to translate the 'green Irish tweed' idea he had explored at Creed into a sleeker, more accessible mass-market fougère.
NameNamed for its cool, mineral, aquatic-aromatic character.
Why it mattered
- Defining mass-market launch of the 'fresh aromatic' / aquatic-fougère style of the late 1980s and 1990s; popularised dihydromyrcenol and Ambroxan at unusually high concentration for a designer release
The flacon
Dimpled blue-glass flask shaped like a hip flask, evoking sea water.
Footnotes
- Coty's tribute documentary credits Cool Water as the manifesto of the 'New Freshness' movement; Bourdon himself has called it the work he is most proud of.
The Curator's Note
The day fragrance left the perfumery and became deodorant's expensive cousin.
